In a standard craps game, you can make your first bet before the player with the dice (called the shooter) even makes his first throw.  You can choose to make either a pass-line bet (also called a front-line bet) or a don’t-pass-line bet (also called a back-line bet).  A player can place these bets before the shooter’s first roll (called a come-out roll).

A Pass Line Bet:

If the come-out roll in a craps game is any other number, that number becomes the “point”.  If the shooter rolls his point number again before he rolls a seven, he and everyone who bets the Pass Line wins.  If he rolls a seven (the most probably roll) before he rolls his point number, he loses and every player who bet the Don’t Pass Line wins.

Once the shooter sets the point, the real fun begins.  Another bet you can make as you play craps is called the “come bet”.  You can use the come bet just like another Pass Line bet and it works the same way.

For example:  A shooter has a come-out roll of eight.  You place a come bet.  His next roll is a nine.  If he rolls a nine again before he rolls a seven, you win your come bet.  If he rolls a seven, you lose your bet.  These craps rules allow player to continue to place new bets while the shooter either makes his point or “craps out” by rolling a seven. 

Along with the come bet is the “don’t come bet”.  This bet works in a similar fashion to the Don’t Pass line bet.  In this case, you’re betting that the shooter will roll a seven before he hits your come-point number.

After the shooter sets his point number and you’ve placed your bets, you can place additional bets alongside or behind your original Pass (and Don’t Pass) line bets.  These are called “odds” bets and offer true odds with no house advantage – one of the very few instances you’ll find this in a casino.  If you want to play craps and make money, put down odds bets wherever you can for as much as you can.

The main disadvantage to the craps strategy is that all it takes is one roll to lose everything if you’re not careful.  Also, do-side bettors can not take down their bets during the roll sequence.  Once they’ve committed their bets to the shooter, they’re stuck with their bets, win or lose.  This set-up can make a do-side play a high-risk, high-reward craps strategy.

AGAINST THE SHOOTER:  In some cases, playing against the shooter can be profitable and fun.  Since a roll of seven is the most probably result of any roll, the use of don’t come bets can be an effective craps strategy.  Don’t-side play carries slightly better odds, especially on the don’t-pass bet during the come-out roll.  Playing the don’t-side method can also be fun if you enjoy bucking the mainstream.  When a seven does come out, the original don’t-come bet loses but all the bets against the come-points win.

Just as you would want to bet with a confident shooter, you would want to use the opposite craps strategy and bet against a timid or inexperienced shooter.

Craps Tip: Play place bets on 6 and 8.  Place bets mean that you expect the shooter to roll that number before he rolls a seven.  The payout on place bets on 6 or 8 is 7 to 6 (pays $14 on a $12 bet) and the house edge on is only 1.52%, an edge comparable to the standard pass/don’t pass and come/don’t come bets. 

Craps Tip: Play lay bets on 4 and 10. Lay bets mean that you expect the shooter to roll a seven before he rolls the selected number.  The payout on lay bets on 4 or 10 is 1 to 2 (pays $5 on a $10 bet) minus a 5% commission and the house edge on it is 2.44%.  This edge is even lower if the casino chooses to take their 5% commission only on winning bets, so look for these opportunities.

Craps Tip: Avoid the “Any 7” bet.  Although the odds of rolling a seven are better than those of rolling any other number (5 to 1), most craps tables won’t pay out at those odds (4 to 1).  This difference gives this bet a house edge of 16.67%, the biggest house advantage in craps. 

Craps Tip: Stay away from the single-number 2 and 12 bets.  These bets pay off at 30 to 1, which could win you $300 on a $10 bet.  Sound great, right?  Wrong!  These two numbers also have the longest odds of appearing at 35 to 1 each.  They also carry a high house advantage of 13.89%.  In this case, the higher payoff isn’t worth the higher house edge.

Craps Tip: The higher the odds, the higher the edge.  In a typical craps table layout, the bets with the highest odds and highest payouts will be featured in the center of the table.  While all of these bets may look like fun, they also carry the highest house edge and will drain your bankroll that much faster.  Stick with the basics, watch your money grow, and have lots of fun!
