OBJECT: The object of a blackjack game is for your hand to have a higher score than the dealer’s hand without going over twenty-one.

HOW TO WIN AT BLACKJACK:

•  If you hand has a score of twenty-one or less and the dealer’s score is more than twenty-one, the dealer “busts” (loses) and you win $10 per $10 bet.
• If your hand has a score of twenty-one or less and the dealer’s score lower than yours (between seventeen and twenty), you win $10 per $10 bet.
• If your first two cards are an ace and any ten-valued card (ten, jack, queen, king), you have a ‘natural” blackjack and you win $15 per $10 bet (in most cases).

Note:  The name “blackjack” originally came from a time when casinos would pay players $100 per $10 bet at a blackjack game if their first two cards were an ace and a black jack (jack of spades or jack of clubs).  Most major casinos no longer offer this blackjack rule.

BLACKJACK RULES:
At first, blackjack rules appear simple, but a blackjack game also contains unique opportunities for players to push their luck and grow their winnings.  Here are some basic terms to remember when you play blackjack:

HIT:  After you receive your first two cards in a blackjack game, you can choose to take another card to increase your score.  You can signal the dealer by tapping on the table or saying, “Hit me”.  Blackjack rules allow you to hit you hand at any time as long as your score is less than 21. 

STAND:  If you choose not to take any more cards, you can “stand” on your current score.  You can let the dealer know this by saying, “Stand”, or waving your hand over your cards.  Blackjack rules allow you to stand on any hand with a score of twenty-one or less.

Note:  In most blackjack games, the dealer must hit their hand if their score is sixteen or less.  Some blackjack rules allow a dealer to hit on a “soft” seventeen (e.g. ace-six).  Such blackjack rules are common and are also disadvantageous to the player.

DOUBLE DOWN:  This special blackjack rule allows you to double your original bet in exchange for receiving one and only one more card after your original two cards.  Blackjack rules for double-down bets vary among casinos, so ask the dealer or find out when they will allow you to make such a bet.  While some blackjack games allow for double-down bets on any two cards, others have rules that limit double-down chances to certain two-card scores (typically nine, ten or eleven).

SPLIT:  If your first two cards have the same value (e.g. 5/5, 8/8 or K/10), you can make an additional bet and “split” your hand into two new hands.  From there, you can take at least one additional card on each new hand.  Blackjack rules also differ among casinos as to what you can do when you split aces, tens or choose to double-down or re-split your hand.

INSURANCE:  After you receive your first two cards, the dealer shows an ace for their up card and offers “insurance”.  An insurance bet can be up to $5 per $10 bet and wins if the dealer shows a ten-value card as their down card.  Since the dealer would then have a score of twenty-one (a “natural” blackjack), you would lose your original bet.  The problem with the insurance bet is that, on average, the dealer will have a ten-value down card just over thirty percent of the time, not enough to justify increasing your bet by fifty percent with the insurance.  With odds like that, insurance is the worst bet in blackjack.

DOUBLE-DOWN:  Blackjack strategy charts (link) can help players make decisions as to when they can take advantage of double-down opportunities.  Many players will always double down with a starting total of eleven, regardless of the dealer’s up card.  Since the chance of the next card being an eight, nine or ten-value card is over forty-six percent, this gives you excellent odds to improve your score and win your bigger bet.

SPLIT:  Splitting pairs opens up new blackjack strategy venues.  While it may look like a good play to you to split every pair, some pairs are better left intact.  Ten-value pairs will give you a starting total of twenty, the second-best possible hand.  Also, a pair of fives gives you a starting score of ten.  If the dealer has a weak up card (between two and six), this is an excellent opportunity to double down instead of split. 

Note:  Paired aces should always be split, as should paired eights.  If your paired card (e.g. 6/6) is higher than the dealer’s up card (e.g. 5), then you should split your hand.

Some casinos may not allow double-downs or re-splitting after an initial split and most only allow one additional card on split aces, so check with your dealer or online site as to their rules.

Note:  Some tables with more “liberal” rules only offer even money ($10 for every $10 bet) on “naturals”.  Don’t let bigger numbers or crazy rules rob you of the chance to win as much as you can!

•  If you’re tired, angry, hungry, drunk or uncomfortable at the table, stop playing!  Blackjack is a game of decisions – you can’t be expected to make the best decisions when your stomach is growling and your eyelids are drooping.
